George Gilbey update as cops share new statement on probe into Gogglebox star who ‘fell 80ft through skylight’
A COLLEAGUE arrested over the horror death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey has been released under investigation.
The suspect was held by cops after George, 40, fell to death while scaling a warehouse in Essex on Wednesday.
He was quizzed on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter but has since been released under investigation.
Essex Police added: "This is a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive and our enquiries are ongoing.
Friends revealed George had been on the roof of the building without a harness when the tragedy unfolded
As his colleagues begged him to come down, the CBB star tumbled 80ft through a skylight and landed on concrete below.
A friend said: "George had not been in a good way and maybe should not have been working at all. He was up on the roof and the others were shouting at him to get down and to be careful.
“He was shouting back that he was all right, even though he was not very steady on his feet.
“Then, he apparently came through a skylight so fell from the outside of the roof about 80ft on to concrete inside. Poor George did not stand a chance and it is a terrible way to go.”
George was tragically declared dead at the EGL Homecare site in Shoebury, Essex, on Wednesday.
The horror came three years after that of his stepdad Peter McGarry, who starred with him and mum Linda McGarry, 74, on Gogglebox.
George had struggled after first finding fame on the Channel 4 show in 2013.
He was jailed for three months in 2019 for drink-driving and was convicted of attacking ex Gemma Conway, the mother of his seven-year-old daughter Amelie.
The CBB finalist was also due in court next month for allegedly assaulting another ex partner.
But heartbroken pals said George had been trying to get his life back on track after months of drinking heavily.
One said: "George was a lovely boy — but was like a leaf in the wind. He had spiralled a bit out of control.”
