He confessed it was still "raw" when his co-star failed to hold back her laghs.

The moment came on the BBC's morning offering as the two stars discussed the day's newspaper headlines.

The furry animals are often left abandoned despite the pet shops insiting that a "rabbit is for life".

Having discussed the topic, Sally made a quip to Jon about whether he had ever been a rabbit owner.

With a whopping grin on her face, Sally said to Jon: "I bet you had a bunny as a kid."

Jon replied that he did as he recounted that the beloved bunny was called Hazel.

Making light of the situation, Sally smirked as she hit back and asked if Hazel was a bunny for life.

Jon looked down as he said: "Not anymore. Please not this morning, it's too raw."

Sally then laughed straight in his face as she nonchalantly quipped: "Oh, stop! Why Hazel?"

The TV presenter then told her he believed it was after the hit film Watership Down but then quipped he should have foreseen the tragic end based upon the movie.

He said: "I think it was Watership Down. But of course that didn't end well either!"

Attempting to move away from the scenario, Sally then said: "That didn't end well! Aww Jon, should we finish on high?"

Jon's appearance on the show comes just a day after he vanished from the sofa again amid a string of hosting absences.

While no reason was given for the dad-of-three's absence, BBC Breakfast fans noticed he was missing.

One viewer took to social media to ask: "Has Beardy Jon phoned on sick again?"
