HAIRY Bikers star Dave Myers, who has died aged 66, was gobsmacked after first setting eyes on wife Liliana Orzac.

The pair met at a Romanian hotel during filming for the Hairy Bikers before becoming pen pals and marrying in 2011.

But Dave said co-presenter Si King almost scuppered things for him and his future hotel manager wife.

He told The Guardian in 2014: "As she escorted Si and me up a spiral staircase, I whispered: 'Cor, I really fancy her'.

"And he said: 'Nah, leave off, mate. She's dead scary'."

Si announced Dave's death in a statement on Thursday revealing his friend passed away "peacefully"; surrounded by his family.

Posting on Twitter, he revealed: "Hi everyone, I’m afraid I bear some sad news.

"Last night, on 28th February 2024, with Lili, Dave’s wife, his family, close friend David and myself by his side, he passed away peacefully at home."

Myers revealed his cancer diagnosis on the Hairy Bikers - Agony Uncles podcast in May 2022, but did not specify what type he was suffering from.

Later that year, he told BBC Radio Cumbria the toll his diagnosis had taken on his wife.

He said: "It is enormous pressure on Lil my partner.

"But Si was the one who drove us around for a week, hospital to hospital. London in and out, in and out.

“There was a week when Lil had to go away. So Si came to see me, and take me to the hospital and he batch cooked for my freezer.

"The first lot of chemo I had was really severe. And by the second lot my hair came out. So that was it.

“It was, ‘Lil get the clippers’. The Hairy Bikers or not, for anybody it’s not nice."

The couple lived together in Kent before moving to Staffordshire last summer.

Myers and King found fame as the Hairy Bikers more than 20 years ago.

The duo travelled around the UK, Europe and the wider world on their motorbikes - eating and cooking wherever they stopped.

Their latest BBC series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, started just weeks ago.

In the first episode, Myers told viewers it was "a dream come true"; to be back on his motorbike.

He added: "I wasn't sure I'd ever get back in the saddle again".

"There was a time I couldn't balance, I couldn't walk, I didn't think I'd be getting on a bike."

'A BEACON IN THIS WORLD'

In his statement this morning, Si added: "All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing.

"His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own.

"Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment.

"My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.

"I wish you God’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world.

"See you on the other side. Love ya.

"I know Dave and his family would want me to thank all of you who sent messages of support in recent times.

"It meant the world to him, his family and all The Hairy Bikers team.

"I am sending you all much love and gratitude for those simple acts of kindness, generosity and spirit.

"We are eternally grateful for them. May I ask you all for one further kindness and allow Lili, his wife, his family, close friends and I some time and some peace to process our huge loss.

"I am sure I will see you all soon. Love Si x."
