His first, between 2004 and 2007, saw him woo female 'groupies' on nights out and bed many of them.

In a candid interview, he told the : "I'd go to nightclubs and there were always loads of dolly birds hanging around looking for fun and I had lots of fun. But girls still called me Adam half the time.

"It's weird when the girl shouts out your character's name in bed. It's also an easy excuse to kick them out on the street and not have to pay for dinner though!"

In the end the attention proved to be more hassle than it was worth and ultimately led to Sam quitting the soap.

However, nine years later he felt ready to return and, like the set itself, his character had a major transformation.

In Sam's early days on the programme, when he was aged between 18 and 21, Corrie was based at the old Granada Studios in the centre of Manchester.

When he made his comeback in 2016 it was in Media City, Salford, and the groupie conundrum wasn't such an issue.

On the cobbles his smooth lawyer character Adam parked his own womanising ways for a more settled existence with Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien).

Instead it was Adam who was on the receiving end of heartbreak when their marriage hit the skids last year after Sarah cheated with Damon Hay, leading Adam down a very dark path indeed.

In a shocking new storyline Adam has teamed up with Damon's brother, murderer Harvey Gaskell, to help free him from prison in exchange for killing off Damon.

Harvey was convicted of shooting Nick Tilsley's ex Natasha leaving her son Sam without a mother.

Adam agreed to help try and free the gangster by getting an innocent man to confess.

Harvey sent Adam in search of a terminally ill man called John Perry, who would take the rap for the crime, but there is still work to be done to pull off the audacious plot.

Coronation Street continues on ITV1 and ITVX.
