Mum-of-two Kate, also 56, made her Good Morning Britain return on Thursday, in an episode which fans branded her "so strong."

On her show comeback she interrupted co-host Ben Shephard, 49, - who made a sweet gesture as his best pal arrived at the ITV desk - as she opened up on the incident.

Ben was reading out messages from viewers welcoming Kate back.

The star then put out her arm and said: "Do you know, the other day somebody called me a widow for the first time.

"I suddenly realised what everyone goes through.

"Every single moment is something new and we have all just got to go through it.

She added: "Sorry to interrupt. But I really get what people feel."

Kate was welcomed back into the GMB fold in-person with a slew of warm messages.

It came after she appeared on GMB via a live video link to her London home and let her emotions flow on Monday.

Earlier in the week, Kate fought back tears as she revealed the real reason she was returning to work less than a week after her spouse's funeral.

Holding back tears on Monday's ITV episode, she said: "I don't know how it's going to be. Grief isn't containable in a day or year.

"People ask why I'm going back to work. Life has to start. We have to pick ourselves up and go on.

"That's what Derek would want me to do. Thank you to everyone who made it possible."

Derek died on January 3 from complications of long Covid.

The Lobbyist-turned-psychologist was one of the UK's longest suffering patients of Covid.
