Matthew was recalling the time he first met ex Coronation Street actress Denise during an episode of Stars in Their Eyes.

At the time, Denise belted out Petula Clarke hit Downtown - yet told how an on-set malfunction resulted in a wait of five hours before her character was revealed to the live audience.

Yet that wasn't the only singing show competition secret revealed on Good Morning Britain as Matthew told how the programme's "Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be ..." catchphrase was almost defunct.

This is because his real name is actually David, with the Urmston star's birth name David Allan Kelly.

Anchor Susanna Reid said: "Very often Matthew people come up to you in the street and say 'do that phrase, do that phrase'" before Matthew interjected: "And I can't, because my name is in it.

"But I am very proud to be the Matthew in the 'tonight Matthew I'm going to be.'"

He then stunned the ITV show as he said: "It's not even my real name, it's not my real name.

"My real name is David."

This prompted a shocked Susanna to quiz: "Is it?" before Denise turned around on her seat and echoed: "Is it?

"I didn't know that!"

Matthew replied: "Did you not know that? Yes."

The duo will soon star together on-stage in a production of The Gap in Manchester.

Meanwhile, Matthew previously told how he was almost killed on the iconic Stars In Their Eyes set.

His epic TV return was revealed in 2023, with his role in BBC comedy Inside No 9 set to air this year.
