FAMILY AGONY

Susanna Reid holds back tears as families of Nottingham stabbing attack beg ‘what have we done to deserve this?’

Barnaby's mum Emma also commented on the sentence handed to her son's killer

GMB's Susanna Reid held back tears today as she spoke to the parents of Nottingham attack victim Barnaby Webber.

He and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, were stabbed to death last year by Valdo Calocane on their way home from a night out.

Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic, went on to kill 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates during the June 13 rampage.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain, David and Emma Webber asked "why us?" as they recalled the nightmare of losing their son.

David, 52, said: "What have we done to deserve this? What have we done wrong?"

While Emma added: "I can't believe we are that family that this has happened to. It could have happened to any family."

Calocane, 32, was last week sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

But the triple killer's ruling was slammed as "insulting" by Barnaby's parents who are now calling for a public enquiry.

Emma said: "The only person that has been put away properly for an indefinite time is Ian Brady.

"What if he [Calocane] fully responds to treatment, this is an intelligent man. It hangs over you. He could be released.

"It is just insulting, he is in hospital now, he continues to receive his benefits. He gets activities.

"We are left as victims, we have 12 therapy sessions and that's it. How do you rebuild?"

Susanna Reid held back tears and choked up as the mum told how Barnaby "didn't stand a chance" when he was "ambushed by this monster".

But Emma said Grace was a "hero" for trying to fight back against Calocane, before being killed herself.

David also told the ITV show how Barnaby's murder has "destroyed" his younger brother, Charlie.

He added: "He's got a whole life he has got to make in front of him. I fear for him."

Calocane had travelled up from London before being caught on camera walking around the streets of Nottingham.

CCTV showed University of Nottingham students Barnaby and Grace walking home just moments before they were fatally stabbed in Ilkeston Road just after 4am.

Ian Coates was later found dead with knife injuries in Magdala Road after his van was stolen.

The killer then drove the van at pedestrians Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski and Sharon Miller in Milton Street and Upper Parliament Street, in the city centre.

Calocane - who holds a mechanical engineering degree from Nottingham Uni - had been sectioned four times, yet appeared to dupe experts and was allowed to only occasionally meet psychosis teams.

An urgent review has been launched into how he slipped through the net of the authorities.
