But as the series progresses, Grantchester fans have become more concerned as they saw Reverend Will Davenport, played by Tom Brittney, racked with guilt during Thursday’s episode.

Although he nearly faced the law and had to be bailed out by his good friend Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green, it became apparent that it was nothing more than an unfortunate accident.

In the most recent instalment, Will’s wife, Bonnie Davenport, played by Charlotte Ritchie, returned home because she was concerned about the effect the incident has had on him.

She tried to get him to open up and talk about his emotions as she noticed he had become withdrawn since it happened, but he abruptly shut her down and turned on her.

During the heated argument, Reverend Will raged at his wife, saying: “You do not understand, Bonnie, because we are very different people.

“I have faith, and you don't, and it is my faith that has seen me through this."

In later scenes, Will seemed to be returning to his usual self as he told his wife to return to her parents' house.

He smiled as he waved his wife and child off, claiming he was happy to have the quiet.
