ONE of the writers for the Lizzie Mcguire reboot, which Disney+ axed, has spoken out about why the show was discontinued.

Jonathan Hurwitz has revealed that the streamer might have had a problem with a 'raunchy' storyline involving the titular character, Hilary Duff.

Two episodes of the Lizzie McGuire revival had already been filmed before the cancellation.

Episode one of the Lizzie McGuire reboot saw Lizzie working as an interior designer in New York City.

She quickly moved back to California after her chef boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend.

Once she returns to her childhood home she gets in touch with her childhood crush, Ethan Craft.

In a TikTok video, Jonathan shared why he thinks the third episode of the Lizzie McGuire animated series was never taken on by Disney+.

He said: “Episode three wasn’t filmed, but there was a script for it.

“Lizzie wakes up in Ethan’s bed, in his water polo t-shirt. Animated Lizzie pops up, and she has this little checklist, like a to-do list, and Ethan is on the list, and she checks it off.

“I think she says something like, ‘I checked that box – dramatic pause – twice.’"

He concluded: “So if I had to guess, I saw another comment about certain storylines, [about] why Disney wasn’t comfortable with it, my guess was… that moment was probably one of them.”

In reality, the episode wouldn’t actually have featured a sex scene – but even the implication of sex may have been enough to get the script axed.

In 2020, Hilary spoke about the show being cancelled and said in a statement: “I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly and despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen.”

At the time, Disney+ added: “Lizzie McGuire fans have high expectations for any new stories.

“Unless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we’ve decided to hold off, and today, we informed the cast’s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series."

Production in 2020 was halted after original series creator Terri Minsky was fired from working on the reboot series.

However, two years later, Hilary revealed that she had told Disney+ that the series needed to centre around an adult version of the beloved character.

Speaking to she expressed: “She had to be 30 years old doing 30-year-old things.

“She didn’t need to be doing bong rips and having one-night stands all the time, but it had to be authentic. I think they got spooked.”

Since then, productions or discussions about a Lizzie McGuire reboot on Disney+ have yet to surface.
