big comeback

Legendary British spy drama ‘returning to screens’ after a whopping 50 years off screens

When we think of Avengers, we automatically think of Marvel, but not in this case

A HIT 1960s British spy drama could finally be returning to screens after 50 years off air.

The mind behind Sex Education, Ben Taylor, is working on a reboot of The Avengers, which was created by Doctor Who's Sydney Newman.

Planning the upcoming project alongside Ben, who is directing the pilot, are industry creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay.

When we think of Avengers, we automatically think of Marvel, but not in this case.

The Avengers being mentioned was a hit spy series which ran for six seasons and then returned briefly in the 1970s for a sequel series.

The show, which gained a cult-like fan base, captured the hearts of many viewers with its action-packed storylines, iconic vehicles and unforgettable characters.

The original series of The Avengers followed Steed, Dr Cathy Gale, and Emma Peel, who were played so memorably by Patrick Macnee, Honor Blackman, and Dame Diana Rigg.

The trio and several other workers were members of The Ministry, a mysterious organisation that investigates and shuts down criminal activity in the UK.

In 1998, a feature film of the same name was released starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman.

The movie was a dreadful failure at the box office and currently has terrible reviews, scoring only five percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.8 on IMBb.

Twenty years after the 1998  film was released, Iron Man 3 director Shane Black strived to get a pilot ordered, but it was unsuccessful.

In 2023, Charlie Higson and Paul Whitehouse told that they, too, had been approached to reboot the franchise, but they declined the offer.

Higson explained: "At the time, we said no, but actually, something like that would be fun. We were busy on our own stuff at the time, and we thought, 'Do we really want to bring back something that's not going to be as good as the original?"

The Avengers remake might actually come to fruition due to it being helmed by talent by two acclaimed British shows and produced by current rights holder StudioCanal and Warner Bros Discovery's Wall-to-Wall.
