A GLADIATOR was disqualified tonight as the new series kicked off on BBC One.

Within minutes of the first episode Viper was banned from the challenge Collision, after he crashed into contender Finley and tackled him to the ground.

Three Gladiators continued to swing like wrecking balls to force Finley off.

But the ref dashed over to help Finley, as Viper - real name Quang Luong - stood on the bridge scowling.

Gladiators' commentator shouted as viewers watched: "He can't do that!"

Mark Clattenburg, previously a referee in the 2016 FA Cup, Champions League, and European Championship final, told the bodybuilder: "Viper, you've now been disqualified from this event."

As Viper stormed off, he added: "Viper left his trapeze to go onto the bridge, this is not allowed, so Finley will repeat the last 30 seconds of the event."

Viewers turned on the Gladiator and claimed he wanted to be the new Wolf figure.

One said: "Viper clearly trying to be the new wolf. He's got nothing on wolf man."

Another insisted: "Viper has definitely been cast as the new Wolf Man."

Another said: "Why try and turn this 1 into wolf. Let him be himself ffs."

Viewers loved to see Gladiators return with Lycra-clad stars taking on members of the public in strength and agility challenges in the arena.

One more said: "Gladiators is an absolute pantomime of a show, so so cheesy, and I still ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT."

Another raved: "I can't believe I'm saying this because this type of show is generally NOT my thing, but the comeback of Gladiators on the BBC could not be more welcome. I love it."

The original series aired from 1992 to 2000 and was hosted by Ulrika Jonsson.
