During last Saturday’s instalment of Casualty, viewers witnessed Holby ED Ryan Firth resign from the show in heartbreaking scenes following a violent attack at work, which left him traumatised.

Fans assumed that he was temporarily leaving the series,  but the hospital drama’s official Instagram account posted a picture of Eddie-Joe beaming alongside castmates Sarah Seggari, Anna Chell and Barney Walsh on set, confirming that he would not be making a comeback.

The post was captioned: “When four become three… We will miss you Eddie-Joe! #Casualty”, referring to how the four started on the soap at the same time playing the roles of new staff nurses in Holby ED.

Surprised fans swarmed the comments section with their final farewell as one penned: “ Gutted, time to change your mind? Don't like change. Don't go, Ryan.”

Another added: “I thought he was coming back.”

A third chimed: “So sorry you have gone.”

The medial drama’s X(Twitter) account also shared the same post, and fans were equally as devastated, with one saying: “NOOOO!! Ryan was one of my favourite characters."

A second wrote: “Was hoping that Ryan was going to change his mind in a few weeks and come back to the department, will be sorry to see him go."

A third typed: “It is shame he is gone loved his storylines x.”

A fourth expressed: “Genuinely thought Eddie would stay a bit longer. His character had promise.”

While another user commented: “I didn’t think Ryan would leave so early.”

On the January 6 episode, fans saw Ryan still recovering and trying to come to terms with the vicious attack he suffered the previous week.

ED stalwart Charlie Fairhead, who played Derek Thompson, tried to help him navigate through his trauma, but the young Holby ED was unresponsive to his attempts.

Completely traumatised and disheartened by what had happened to him, a panicking Ryan quickly checked out of the hospital, handing in his ID badge resulting in him ultimately resigning.

Ladies’ man Eddie joined the show in April 2023 and quickly became quite popular among viewers, who grew fond of his character and good looks.

During his short stint on the show, he caused many problems for fellow nurse Jodie Whyte, played by Anna Chell, after he told people he believed she was having an affair with clinical lead Max Cristie, played by Nigel Harman.

However, it was revealed that she was, in fact, Max's daughter and the pair were forced to disclose their relationship to everyone else.

Next week viewers can expect to see ambulance staff terrorised as an angry mob gathers outside the medical building, and Dr Stevie causing chaos on the ward with her new rules.

Casualty is on BBC One on Saturday nights.
