In the classic clip from 1997, antique expert Noel Barrett took a look at a classic beer stein which had belonged to the gentleman's grandmother.

Kept in exceptional condition, the guest told Noel: “This was my grandmother's.

“She had it over the kitchen sink, on the shelf and she’d always put her string in there.”

Taking a closer look at the item, Noel said: “Well it’s a wonderful thing, I see we have the original maker’s label in here.

“It was made in New York City, this dates from around 1880."

He went onto reveal that the glass was actually an advertisement glass used to promote a brand of beer and be placed on display in a bar in the US.

Noel added: “These were made to be on display behind a bar to advertise the beer, in this case, Gambrinus Lager Beer.

“It has a reverse on glass applied label, this is a curved piece of glass, painted in reverse and then applied to the mug.

“Most commonly you’d find a liquor bottle would say the name of the brand liquor and it would have a beautiful label on it.”

Insisting it was very rare to see such an item, the guest told him that he was planning to offload the item at a car boot sale for $50.

However, he was left stunned and breaking down when Noel revealed its true worth.

The expert said: "You have a real, real treasure here,” as he admitted that the item was worth an eye-watering £3,000.

The guest was instantly left whimpering in tears at the news.

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
