However, they were left gutted as they realised it was Ellie Harrison's final ever episode.

The beloved presenter, 46, previously announced she had quit Countryfile back in October.

In her final scenes that aired last night, Ellie was shown a montage of video messages from her co-hosts.

After the clip, Anita Rani told her: "Ellie, I probably shouldn't say this since you are leaving after 13 years... But it is one of the best gigs on TV."

Ellie replied:  "It is, it's a gift. I feel like I've just been super lucky, you know. It's the best gig in the world, really."

The host was then shown a VT of her very first episode on Countryfile.

"I've had the best geography field trips exploring these beautiful lands.

"It's been an honour to be trusted by all the people I've met on the programme and by the audience. And I thank you for your time."

Viewers at home have been left heartbroken and vowed to 'boycott' the show from now on.

Taking to social media, one fan said: "Sad to see you move on from Countryfile. Do we get to see you elsewhere? For now thank you."

A second wrote: "You will be missed on Countryfile, is there something new in the pipeline?"

""When Clarkson and co left Top Gear I never watched the downgraded new version. After Ellie goes, doubt I will watch Countryfile again," said a third.

While a fourth commented: Ellie is leaving after 13yrs. It's been wonderful Ellie. Will miss you."

Countryfile airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
