The pole in the background started to come down first

On Monday, Deivid, who works for NSC TV, a Brazilian regional television network in the state of Santa Catarina, was reporting in front of a ruptured sandbank.

There were several people behind him, with one man digging at the site, but before he could repair anything, a small landslide led the telephone poles along the bank to give way.

The pole in the background slipped first, sparking panic all around. The onlookers managed to get out of the way, but the man who was digging fell down the sandbank. Others jumped down to help him to safety.

However, as the pole which came down in the background was connected to the pole next to Deivid by the telephone cables and that started to come down too.

Deivid was still reporting while this was happening, but hearing the screams of the people behind him prompted him to move out of the way.

No sooner had he ducked forward in front of the camera had the pole above come down to the ground.

It was a lucky escape for the journalist, as just seconds later, live cables covered the spot where he was standing.

As the camera shook too, it seems the camera operator only just escaped, too.

Later explaining the horrifying incident, the journalist said: “We were recording in a safe place, but the movement of the wood, where it gave way, also moved the post behind and ended up making it fall, then it pulled the others right at the time we were recording”

A spokesman for the local firefighting unit reportedly said a sinkhole had subsequently opened up on the highway. The video shows traffic stopping suddenly in the distance.

The sandbank, which was linked to the ocean, then ruptured and caused more devastation. Many buildings became flooded and several poles in the area also came down.
