Kevin McCloud confirms death of two Grand Designs stars while filming ‘very difficult’ projects

One of the episodes currently being filmed has been hit by tragedy

CHANNEL 4's Kevin McCloud has opened up on two heartbreaking deaths which have occurred during filming of the popular TV show.

The star has seen a vast variety of house projects and renovations over his 20-plus years on screen with Grand Designs but sadly said not all had gone the way that everyone had hoped and planned.

Kevin admitted that personal issues had cropped up a number of times during filming including two "very difficult" projects which led to two participants deaths.

The TV presenter spoke about the challenging times during the making of the show with New Zealand publication

In the interview, Kevin admitted they were currently at the heart of filming a brand new episode, yet to be aired, in which a participant had sadly passed away.

The star recalled: “We are doing a very difficult project right now.

"We had no idea and neither did our contributors, but the husband fell gravely ill and has passed away during the filming process, and it makes the narrative very hard to graft. Because you think where do we go [from here]?”

While he did not divulge any further details about that heart-wrenching case, he also spoke fondly about another show participant, Nat McBride, who sadly died during the making of an episode from stomach cancer.

It left his wife Lucie Fairweather to opt to continue the project alone after his passing.

Speaking of the situation, he said: “She and her young husband in their late 20s were going to build this beautiful little chalet bungalow with amazing architecture – he was a sustainability campaigner; she’s a teacher.

“On day one he announces on camera that he’s got stomach cancer.

"He passed away six months later, and we had one day’s filming in the can. And then 18 months later, Lucy rang up and said, ‘I’m going to do this by myself’, with her two children.

"She did it with architect Gerry Tate, who held her hand through the process, guided her through it.

"Sometimes you don’t know where [a situation] will go, and it can turn such a positive corner.”

Lucie and Gerry went on to win an award for their impressive build in the wake of such tragedy.
