Bernie Winter faces prison in court over catalogue fraud in Coronation Street
PAUL Foreman has been battling motor neurone disease and struggling to adapt to his new, shortened life.
But devastation strikes the Coronation Street builder again as his mother Bernie Winter faces legal trouble - and a prison sentence.
Bernie (portrayed by Jane Hazlegrove) is known for her money-making schemes and was deeply concerned for her sick son Paul (Peter Ash).
As mentioned above, Paul was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) and the debilitating illness is slowly taking over.
Paul is slowly losing mobility and control over his body, meaning he has been unable to work, thus relying on a Personal Independence Payment.
But as she tried to help Paul, Bernie was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

The character's devastating Christmas story begins next week on ITV with a court date.
It all begins when Bernie breaks the news to both Paul and his sister Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) that she's up in court for handling stolen goods following her shocking arrest.
On Joel Deering's (Calum Lill) advice, Bernie pleads guilty when her big day in court comes along.
Paul, Gemma, Billy Mayhew () and Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) are present for the court date.

They all reel in shock as the Judge states that given Bernie's record, they have no other option but to impose a custodial sentence.
This means Bernie will likely be behind bars as Paul's condition worsens at the end of the year.
Worried he may not see his mother before it's too late, Paul is devastated and begs the Judge to reconsider.
Crushed, Paul tells her about his MND diagnosis and insists he needs his mother by his side.
Paul is set for a heart-breaking exit as he gears up for his last ever Christmas on the cobbles.
The beloved character was recently told he only had six to twelve months to live.
As viewers of the Manchester-based drama will recall, Paul will be killed off at the end of the year, leaving the soap behind in 2024 after five years.

Speaking about how Bernie's legal trouble will impact Paul's demise, soap boss Iain MacLeod said: "This Christmas, the catastrophe arises from Bernie and her historical involvement with Shelly's slightly dubious online scamming."
"It puts her in a massive amount of legal hot water, to the extent that there's every likelihood that she's not going to be present for what will be Paul's last Christmas – and the family might not get to be together for one last festive moment."
