Stephen was threatening to kill Jenny when Peter rammed his car into him, and he died on the cobbles moments later.

Peter was then brought in for questioning by the police, and Tuesday's episode saw him sitting with his lawyer in the interview room.

They were then joined by DS Swain and Craig Tinker, who was promoted to detective earlier this year.

While DS Swain did most of the questioning, Craig interjected at times, but a number of Coronation Street fans questioned whether he should have been in the interview room at all.

Taking to X - formerly Twitter - one wrote: "No way would Craig be involved in Peter's case #Corrie".

Another added: "@itvcorrie Serious question ... Is having Detective Craig in Peters interview a conflict of interest?"

A third raged: "Craig would not be allowed in the interview room with Peter as they know each other well. Conflict of interest. Come on #corrie ... do better! #coronationstreet".

Meanwhile a fourth tweeted: "There’s absolutely NO WAY Craig would be on Peter’s case. How ridiculous."

Chris, 55, is set to leave the soap in the near future after 23 years playing Peter.

The actor confirmed his current storyline ties into his departure, saying: "Yes without giving too much away this will affect his future.

"He has been arrested on suspicion of murder, he is struggling with his demons.

"He has always had lots of enemies but at the end of the day he is his own worst enemy, he is the one that has suffered at his own hands the most emotionally and we can see this starting to happen again.

"He is facing prison, the drink is on his mind again, Audrey wants him to pay for what he has done. It is a turbulent time ahead."

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
