His chance of escape was brought to an end and he died in the gutter, disgraced in front of his family.

Earlier in the episode Stephen was desperately trying to find his passport so he could flee abroad.

Jenny realised that Stephen would return to hers to find it so she and Rita made their way to Roy’s for safety but on the way Jenny discovered the Rovers had been broken into.

Heading inside she found Sean’s son Dylan and Mason stealing old booze, and she stayed for old time’s sake before Sarah turned up to tell her that Stephen was back.

But as Sarah and Jenny realised they weren’t alone they went to make their escape, Stephen appeared and hit Sarah in the head with a blunt object.

Jenny begged Stephen to let her help Sarah as she bled out but he refused, blaming her for everything that had happened.

He demanded his passport back as Sarah began to come to, but Stephen threatened to hurt her.

Jenny lost it with him and told him: “I hid it. I’ll give it to you but only if you tell me what you did to Leo.”

Gaining courage she flew into anger and confronted Stephen, demanding the truth about what happened to Leo and Teddy.

Stephen confessed to killing Leo, hiding his suitcase and covering up his sick crimes.

“You watched me grieve,” she raged.

“You want to kill me, you kill me. Do you want to finish me off with that broken bottle or can you do it with your bare hands?”

But as Stephen confessed to killing Teddy and Rufus, he left Jenny terrified that he was going to kill her in Thailand.

Jenny demanded to know why but Stephen’s explanation about wanting to be a success and Weatherfield being his only chance didn’t wash with her.

“Just go, run away before Audrey sees who you really are,” she said.

And as he grabbed his stuff, Jenny heard Adam outside and she screamed for help.

Delusional Stephen tried to convince her to come with him to Thailand and she kneed him and ran to the door, banging on it to get help.

Jenny fought for her life but Stephen grabbed the broken wine bottle and

“I’m leaving and not you or anyone else is going to stop me,” Stephen screamed.

But Sarah appeared behind him and smacked him over the head with a bar stool and told him: “Wanna bet?”

Adam rushed in to help Sarah, but before he could get to Jenny, Stephen grabbed her and held the broken wine bottle to her throat.

Dragging her outside, Stephen found a crowd of his family and friends and he began shouting at all of them before Audrey arrived and she tried to calm him down.

He sent David to get his car so he could make his escape but meanwhile Carla Connor raced to the pub to save Jenny, and Peter drove back to Weatherfield to save Peter.

As David pulled up in his car, Stephen ordered him out and dragged Jenny to the car where she took him to task.

Stephen dropped the bottle and let Jenny go and as she ran off Peter Barlow drove into him, knocking him down.

He lay dying in the road as Sally screamed at him to tell her where Tim was, Audrey sobbed and Michael tried to save his life.

The serial killer was declared dead at the scene, while the family reeled with Audrey accusing Peter of cold blooded murder.
