BBC’s Lucy Owen shares rare health update as she returns to work after three months off for terrifying surgery

BBC Wales Today host Lucy Owen shared a health update as she returned to work after three months off following surgery.

The 52-year-old was rushed to hospital back in June and needed an emergency op for a detached retina.

The procedure saved her eyesight but came with a three-month recovery period.

Lucy, who has been a presenter on Wales Today since 2007, updated fans on social media afterward

She wrote: “I need to say a huge thank you to the NHS. [They] stopped me losing sight in my eye with surgery for a detached retina.”

“Very grateful to my optician, who spotted it and rushed me in,” Lucy added.

A few days later, Lucy shared that she was comfortably recuperating at home in a snap, which showed her surrounded by get-well cards and a huge bouquet of flowers from her BBC colleagues.

“Thanks so much for your lovely messages, so kind of you. Having to lie on my side for a week and won’t get my vision back for a few months - tricky for autocue! but look what I had from my wonderful Wales Today colleagues. So lucky to work with such gorgeous people”

Along with lying on her side for a week, Lucy had to wear an eyepatch for most of her recovery.

She seemed in good spirits during her recovery, even sharing a rare update of herself wearing the patch, noting that she was embracing all the “pirate jokes.”

This week Lucy shared another happy update, revealing she had regained her vision and was getting ready to head back to work.

She thanked friends, family, and 33,000 X (formerly Twitter) followers for their support writing: "Filming for Wales Today once I’m out of my PJs, first time in 3 months. Thank you so much for all your lovely messages, kept me going! Thank you."

Fans were delighted to see the presenter back at full strength, and many replied to her post with kind words.

“That’s so good to hear. Looking forward to seeing you again on Wales Today,” one fan said.

Another commented: “Be great to see you back Lucy, missed you. Hope you’re feeling a lot better.”

“Very very good news, Lucy. Will be so lovely to see you again. I’m sure many will agree with me when I say I’ve missed you terribly!” added a third.
