A first-look clip at Holly in action was shown during a teaser clip on Good Morning Britain.

Show hosts Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway were left stunned as they questioned why the TV presenter was in the acclaimed drama.

The drama returns to screens this Sunday with Holly's cameo set to dazzle the nation.

In the clip, one of the programme's detectives ask: "Is that the queen of daytime?"

As his much older colleague then replies: "Gloria Hunniford? Are you sure?"

Holly could be seen sat atop a throne in the teaser.

The clip cut back to the ITV studio where Neil Dudgeon, who plays DCI John Barnaby was chatting about the forthcoming episodes.

A perplexed Richard said: "That's Holly!"

Co-star Kate quickly asked: "What's she doing cropping up in Midsomer?"

Neil explained how Holly had a long running affiliation with the show after declaring herself as a superfan - which led to her show cameo.

The actor told the show's hosts: "Well, she's sort of a friend of the show I suppose - she's a great fan of the show and we're always looking to broaden our casting net."

Neil went on to say: "She was great, she was thoroughly professional. I think she was a bit nervous when she first arrived.

"She's playing a character called Holly Willoughby, I wouldn't like to say that it's herself."

Speaking previously about her love for the show, Holly said: "I've seen every episode since it started way back when."

She was offered her role on the show during a live appearance on This Morning when the show's stars confessed they would love to have her on the programme.

Holly replied back in shock: "Are you serious? I mean, you're going to have to kill me off really quickly as I'm terrible at acting."

Speaking at the time of filming, the TV star said: "I thought it was just interesting people would turn to a series about murder and death for escapism.

"People have found it a joyous escape from the horrors of real life. My episode involves a murder mystery country house party weekend. Barnaby and Winter turn up to investigate.

"Everyone is trapped on this island with a murderer.";
