The former Aussie television star appeared in a Melbourne court today with his wife and father-in-law in attendance.

The television was put on diversion, meaning he won't have a criminal conviction recorded and was not found guilty.

McGregor will be required to write an apology note after the "assault" at an iconic pub in Melbourne in November of last year.

He will also have to write a thank you letter to the police informant and donate £150 to a charity of his choosing.

If he complies with those conditions before December, the charge will be thrown out and his record cleared.

McGregor told reporters outside of the court today: "I've maintained my innocence all along. I'm glad that it's over and I can move on now and get on with things."

Magistrate Simon Zebrowski said: "“The summary I have taken account of is one momentary very slight touch – that’s all.

"Its an appropriate matter for diversion, no doubt about that.”

CCTV from the popular Melbourne pub, St Kilda's Hotel Esplanade, known by locals as The Espy, showed the alleged incident in November of last year.

McGregor was allegedly seen standing at the bar, and his victim was "standing behind him" at the time.

The alleged victim had complained to the bar before contacting police and pressing charges.

The 41-year-old played police detective Mark Brennan in the iconic Australian soap for eight years.

McGregor first appeared in Neighbours in 2010, but left in 2011 to pursue other acting projects.

He returned to Ramsay Street in 2013 for a guest stint before coming back as a regular cast member in 2014.

In total he starred in 940 episodes but was absent from the show's farewell episode, which featured Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan earlier this year.

McGregor is married to Bianka Voigt and the couple have two young daughters together.

In 2019, McGregor appeared in court to deny calling a stripper a "dirty sl*t" before she allegedly hurled a glass at his head.

The actor claimed he was left with a cut lip after the incident and a "pool of blood" in his hands.
