Brave Strictly star Amy Dowden to open up on heart-breaking breast cancer battle in raw BBC documentary

STRICTLY dancer Amy Dowden is to put her cancer battle in the spotlight in a BBC show.

Cameras have been following the ballroom pro, 32, since her diagnosis with grade three breast cancer in May — after she found a lump the day before she was due to fly to the Maldives on her honeymoon.

Since then, Amy has undergone a mastectomy in July and a round of chemotherapy which began this month — with all of it filmed for the upcoming documentary.

The brave Welsh star has allowed a BBC film crew to follow her treatment in the hope of raising awareness.

A TV source said: “Amy’s breast cancer fight has inspired millions of Strictly fans already, but she wants to do more.

“She’s been sharing every stage online to try to remind everyone to check their breasts and the film will take it one step further.

“The result will be a raw but sensitive film as Amy fights back to fitness — and her beloved dance.”

Amy’s diagnosis means she will not be able to compete on Strictly this year.

But it did not stop her joining her dance colleagues this month for their first day of rehearsals for the 2023 series.

She shared a photo of the meet-up captioned: “Just what I needed.”

Amy said: “I’ve been through a lot in my life and this is another hurdle.

“But if I’m positive and strong, I have got a really good chance of getting back out on the dancefloor as soon as possible.

“The BBC have just been utterly incredible.”

Amy said she hoped to still be able to play some part in Strictly this year.

The documentary, for BBC Wales, will be her second after 2020’s Strictly Amy: Crohn’s and Me.

It saw the Caerphilly-born dancer shine a light on the chronic bowel condition that has impacted her life and career since she was 19.
