Rishi had been feuding with son Jai after it was revealed that he was not his biological father and he had been lying to his son all his life.

Both he and wife Georgia, played by ex-EastEnders star Lin Blakely, had agreed to keep the identity of Jai's father hidden 'until the grave'.

Eventually, it was revealed that the man who Jai had believed to be his uncle was actually his father.

It meant that cousin Suni was actually his half-brother.

Following an explosive showdown, Rishi walked off and it appeared that he would not make Jai and Laurel's wedding.

However, Jai later agreed his father could attend but despite getting all suited and booted to arrive at the Church - he never appeared.

Fans were then left open-mouthed as Rishi could be seen dead at home at the bottom of the stairs.

Whilst there was no indication of foul play, some fans have been convinced that an explosive murder twist could be on the cards.

One fan speculated Charlie Anderson could be the murdered, penning: “Would be a good plot twist if Charles becomes a murderous priest. #Emmerdale.”

Another added:  “Bet Jai pushed Rishi down the stairs #Emmerdale.”

As a third questioned: “I have a few thoughts now following Rishi’s death…Will Tom and Belle move out of Rishi’s home? Who will take ownership? What about Priya and Nickhil too? Surely they have to come back…Jai and Georgia will feel VERY guilty.”

Actor Bhasker Patel revealed today that he was axed from his job on the show.

Appearing on Lorraine, he confirmed he was sensationally dropped from the long-running ITV show.

Speaking to stand-in host Christine Lampard, he explained: "When the producer rang me and said: 'I need to talk to you and we're killing you off because we want a big story and it's going to be a big surprise.'

"Because my 12 years at ITV, they let me do a lot of other work, so I felt a part of ITV, a part of Rishi, but at the same time... I was working in London as well.

"So when the producer said 'we're going to kill you off', I was like: 'Okay, that part of my life with this guy is over and I'm going to move on.''
