The BBC show followed a group of thirty-six men, women, and children over the space of a year.

They were tasked with building a community on the remote Scottish island of Taransay.

Six years after the programme's debut, it returned for a second series in 2007.

A five part reunion show also aired in 2008 on BBC Two which featured the original stars.

Although it ran into problems during filming, the series is best remembered for launching the career of broadcaster, Ben Fogle, 49.

However, the adventurer has now hinted that there might be room for the controversial reality series to go back to it's original roots.

He took to Instagram with a picture of the stunning beach in the background as he hinted at a new idea for how the show can come back.

He wrote: "The owners of Taransay are looking for someone to help restore the island and protect its social and cultural heritage.

"It would make a great social enterprise working alongside the community of Harris to help restore the islands biodiversity but also to evolve the island.

"I tried unsuccessfully to do this 12 years ago, maybe it’s second time lucky."

Ben added: "Anyone interested in joining me with a proposal?
Castaway 2.0? #taransay"

And it seems there may just be appetite for his idea as fans flocked to the comments section, with some even volunteering for a future series.

One wrote: "The original and the best reality TV show. 🙌 I wish they'd show it again with a catch up. ❤️."

A second user commented: "Do it Ben, take the family back to your spiritual home..👊👍."

"Yes please 🙌 stonemason/sculptor here 🙌 also brought up on a farm 🙂 I remember the 1st one 😀," penned a third.

Meanwhile, another fan said: "I'm quite happy to put myself forward for artist in residence. Love Taransay 💙💙."

And a fifth added: "This would be amazing. Castaway has always stayed with me! I can teach!!!!."
