Casualty will mark the public health service's 75th birthday in an episode that will showcase the extraordinary work nurses and doctors do each day.

Airing on the 15th of July, the episode will focus on Amartya, a biker who has been involved in a devastating collision.

Fans will watch as medics try to save his life after he sustains life-changing injuries.

Alongside the drama viewers will also hear from from real-life medical professionals talking about the teamwork, collaboration and investment that is involved every single day to care for each individual patient.

Speaking about the upcoming episode, Jon Sen, the show's executive producer said:  “To mark the 75thanniversary we wanted to shine a light on the awe-inspiring work of the doctors, nurses and paramedics who work in the NHS.

"The episode tells a powerful story that dramatises the skill and immense team-work that goes into helping one patient, Amartya, as he fights for his life.

"We were thrilled when real medical professionals agreed to be interviewed to offer an insight into the highs and lows of dealing with these cases on a daily basis. In this one-off episode the audience gains a truly authentic glimpse behind the curtain to understand what it feels like to stand in the shoes of NHS professionals.”

Meanwhile, Casualty is set to be pulled from screens in a BBC One schedule shake-up.

The show will be dropped from its usual Saturday night slot.

Bosses at the BBC have taken the decision in order to allow for coverage of the upcoming Wimbledon tournament.

As a result, Casualty has been pulled from the airwaves in a move set to cause backlash from fans.

On Saturday 8th July, the programme has been axed from its usual 9:15pm timeslot.

Instead, a highlights replay of the day's Wimbledon action will be aired instead.
