Coronation Street fans furious at soap for repeating plots from classic Corrie

FURIOUS Coronation Street fans have been left calling out the ITV soap amid claims of recycled stories and a decline in quality from the classic episodes.

Viewers have been left underwhelmed and suggested a 'fall from grace' had occurred on the soap in comparison to its heyday.

Many pointed out the difference between the current state of play on the programme and that of the classic episodes currently airing on ITV3.

The digital channel regularly broadcasts classic episodes from the show with those currently on air being from 2002 and 2003.

The nostalgia has left fans pleading with Corrie producers to restore the vibe and quality of yesteryear in order to make the show great again.

Writing on Digital Spy's online forum, one fan wrote: "Turn over to ITV3 now and it's like watching a different soap.

"Community spirit, Rovers full, likeable characters like Sunita, Emma. Where is that now?"

Another added: "Yes, I was channel hopping and came across the classic showing and it was so good. It has such a good energy about it."

A third penned: "Watching classic corrie is a stark reminder of how far the quality of the show has fallen and I fully blame the amount of extra episodes for this.

"I also blame social media to a degree as fans nowadays are always calling for the next storyline asap and have no patience. Long term fans seem to feature at the end of the scale."

As well as fearing there had been a decline in quality, fans were not happy about the soap's "lazy" attempts to recreate stories from the past but with little to no impact.

One added: "The show has become lazy in its storytelling, relying on cheap tactics to keep the audience engaged"

Before another insisted they had "given up" as a result, writing: "I hate to say this but I have given [up] on Corrie now."

In recent months, viewers have watched on as bosses turned Stephen Reid into a serial killer with a ferocious temper.

It followed him weaving his way through the deaths of numerous characters in a similar vein to Richard Hillman and Pat Phelan.

A long-running medical storyline has also hit the cobbles with Paul Foreman's devastating and life-changing MND diagnosis.

Corrie also tackled stories surrounding debilitating illness with Sinead Tinker and Hayley Cropper's battles with cancer as well as Steve and Leanne's son Oliver's death as a child.
