It ran for six successful series before it made a one-off return in 2013 for a special episode.

Fans have been begging bosses to bring it back ever since as it was such a viewer favourite.

And now one former contestant has revealed how much producers paid hopefuls to take on the courses.

Despite the obstacles the participants faced and the risk of injury, their fee was minuet.

Posting on Reddit, the unnamed man explained: "All of the contestants received a nominal appearance fee (the equivalent of around $25 US if I remember.)

"They also fed us lunch (sushi and sashimi, of course) and soft drinks."

The hopeful, who added that he was eliminated during one of the early rounds, said all but one of the show's cast spoke English.

He went on to say the jackpot prize for the overall winner was approximately $10,000 or roughly £7,860.

Meanwhile a reboot of Takeshi’s Castle is officially happening and due to land on Amazon Prime this year.

However, fans of the show have refused to tune in if original narrator Craig Charles doesn't return.

Bosses previously announced that chat show host Jonathan Ross will take over from Craig.
