The pooch had an incredibly sad face and lacked the enthusiasm a dog his age should have - and viewers took to Twitter to express how emotional they were feeling after learning of his abuse.

In heartbreaking scenes the much loved TV presenter said: "Murphy was found tied up a by a member of the public just two days ago. He’s one of the most withdrawn dogs that I have ever seen."

When Paul arrived at Murphy's cage, he was withdrawn and sad. The star added: "This is criminal, there’s no excuse, no excuse whatsoever, and he must be in agony as he’s got scabies and mange. "

He added: "Well, this is tragic. It’s like all the light has been taken out of him."
