A HUGELY popular ITV detective drama is returning to screens after nearly 20 years.
Edinburgh-based Rebus - based on the novels by Ian Rankin - was a fan favourite after its launch in 2000.
The gritty crime thriller centres around Detective Inspector John Rebus as he fights crime in Scotland's capital city.
Speaking of the reboot, actor Stuart Bowman said: " Delighted to be able to announce that I’ll be squaring off with Roger Mac in the new adaptation by Gregory Burke of Sir Ian Rankin’s novels.
"Produced by Eleventh Hour Films, and exclusively on Viaplay next year. I am HUGELY excited about this."
The upcoming series will welcome a third actor taking on the famous detective role and is set to launch next year.
Four Weddings and a Funeral star John Hannah, 60, was the first to portray the Scots cop on ITV back in 2000 before being replaced by The Hobbit’s Ken Stott, 67, in 2006.
The series ended in 2007, but now Sir Ian has teamed up with Denmark-based streaming service Viaplay as telly execs hunt for an actor to play John Rebus in his 30s.
Sir Ian, 62, said: “I’m hugely excited at the thought of Rebus returning to our screens.”
The author will work with screenwriter Gregory Burke for a “reimagining” of his most famous creation for the six-part series which will be filmed around Edinburgh.
