A Place in the Sun host left horrified after GP said bipolar disorder was ‘all in her head’

A PRESENTER from A Place in the Sun has revealed she was left horrified when a GP told her that her bipolar disorder was 'all in her head'.

Leah Charles-King, who is a fan favourite on the Channel 4 house programme, has spoken about her diagnoses.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition which affects your moods, which can swing from one extreme to another.

And Leah has revealed when she reached out for help having suffered manic episodes and thoughts of suicide, she was dismissed.

The TV star told The Express: "I went to my GP and they said it was basically all in my head."

She continued: "'There's no way you can be bipolar, you're too articulate. You're too self-aware', they said. 'You're too aware of your feelings and emotions and the state that you're in.'

"They told me: 'You can't be bipolar, because people with bipolar obviously are crazy - and you don't appear to be crazy right now. "You're just depressed - keep taking these antidepressants'."

However, Leah's symptoms drastically changed and she found herself binge-drinking and barely sleeping.

She was constantly going out and feeling energised as her emotions continued to overwhelm her.

Leah went back to her GP and told them: "I know you're saying that I'm depressed, and before that made sense, but now it doesn't make sense because my symptoms aren't the same. I'm doing all these things that are so out of my character."

It took multiple attempts and for Leah to be on the brink of jumping off an eight-storey building for her to receive the right help and support.

Now in a better place, Leah said: "I mean, that's pretty ridiculous for someone to be discriminated against because they're self-aware or they can explain their feelings.

"How insulting to anyone who has any form of mental illness."
