James, 44, is stepping down on April 27 and is said to be pulling out all the stops for the finale of his American series.

One Direction had been tipped to be part of the line-up of the last ever show, which has aired for eight years.

Celebrity gossip site DeuxMoi made the claims that the band were due to reunite – sending fans into a frenzy.

According to reports, the members of One Direction all happened to have had a break in that schedule around the time of the show.

Even Louis, 31, is set to be free around that time after cancelling his tour in Asia last week due to "unforeseen circumstances".

Meanwhile, pop sensation Harry, 29, isn't due to return to his tour until May, meaning he is also free for the show.

Zayn, 30, doesn't appear to have any international appearances scheduled, after recently returning to social media.

And while Liam, 29, isn't due to appear until Soccer Aid in June, Niall, 29, has no performances booked until late May.

However, after fans went wild over the news, The Late Late Show has since confirmed they will not see One Direction back on screens.

Taking to the offical show Twitter account, an announcement read: "Nobody loves the boys more than us, but this [news] isn't true.

"What is true is we've got an absolutely brilliant 2 hour finale planned to celebrate 8 years of The Late Late Show at 10pm on April 27th."

Devastated fans flooded the post to admit they had been left "heartbroken" after hoping to see the band back together.

"My toxic trait is believing they'll still be on the show," one joked, as a second chimed in: "My heart just shattered."

As part of James' finale, he is due to star in a one-hour special of the YouTube series, with the celebrity guest yet to be revealed.

Tom Cruise, Ben Affleck and Mila Kunis have already been named as stars set to take part in the star-studded episode.

As well as One Direction, other names in the hat for the show including the Kardashians, Kate Hudson and Jennifer Garner.

One Direction rose to fame back in 2010 after the boyband were put together by Simon Cowell on The X Factor.

Zayn called it quits from the band five years later, and after trying to go on as a group of four, after five months, they went on hiatus.

Back in 2015, the four remaining bandmates appeared in one of James' early episodes of Carpool Karaoke.

Since then, fans have long called for the five to come back together, despite them going on to all release their own solo music.

Sources recently told that Liam was keen to get the band back together, despite no plans being set in stone.

"Liam is desperate to get back on the road with the boys, his solo career hasn't remained as successful as he hoped it would, and work has become stagnant for him," an insider said.

"He knows he's somewhat fallen out of favour with the public, and believes the only way he'll be able to win back his fans is with a One Direction reunion."
