They were closely followed by Bad Sisters, The Crown, The English and Slow Horses, which received five nominations each.

However, Happy Valley fans were immediately furious at the fact the acclaimed BBC drama - which came to an end after three series in February this year - received no nominations.

Taking aim at the supposed 'snub' on social media, one angry fan wrote: "Umm, @BAFTA where are the #happyvalley nominations?"

Another added: "So one of the TV's best & most popular shows, #Ghosts, only gets 1 nomination for #BAFTATVAwards?! And the most-watched TV show, #HappyValley, gets none?! Sure @BAFTA
sure…"

A third tweeted: "HappyValley didn't get any nominations, wow that's tight asf, they clearly can't see really good drama."

Meanwhile a fourth raged: "#BAFTA2023 where are the #happyvalley nominations?!!!!"

But the reason why Happy Valley was missing from this year's nominations was soon explained.

The official BAFTA Twitter account tweeted: "Happy Valley wasn't eligible this year as it came out in 2023 but will be eligible for next year's awards."
