Tim shared a post from the British Comedy Guide which referenced the show's axing before he appeared to call on his co-stars to suspend their acting services, in a comedic nod to Gary Lineker's recent fiasco with the BBC over Match of the Day.

He wrote online: "Relying on other comedians to down tools til this is fixed."

The Witchfinder debuted on BBC Two last year and co-starred Daisy May Cooper and Reece Shearsmith and is set in 1600s England and the art of witchcraft.

Despite Tim attempting to have a positive outlook on the show's cancellation, it did not stop fans of the show replying to air their thoughts as they blasted the BBC for axing the comedy.

One fan said: "Very sad news i really enjoyed it, can not believe some of the crap that gets multiple series and yet something original and fun gets cancelled."

A second wrote: "Cracking programme. Like others have said hope it is taken to another channel. Not sure what’s going on with the Beeb at the mo."

Whilst a third said: "Very disappointing news. Definitely a market for this kind of comedy. Pick another historical period and keep going please!"

Another joked back: "I am not watching another thing on the BBC in solidarity until Daisy May Cooper is in at least 50% of all shows."

The Sun exclusively revealed that the show had been ditched by the BBC.

A TV insider said: “The Witchfinder kicked off with decent ratings but quickly plunged to a level where execs just couldn’t justify giving it a second season.

“It’s fair to say the concept was fairly niche so it was always going to be tricky finding an audience, even on BBC2.

"But although it won’t be coming back, its departure does make way for new comedy projects on the Beeb.”

The Witchfinder was set in 1645 during the English Civil War and featured This Country star Daisy as a suspected sorceress being dragged across East Anglia for a trial.

Tim Key, who is best known for playing Simon, Alan Partridge’ sidekick, took the role of witchfinder Gideon Bannister.
