Nine out of ten top box office films were sequels or spin-offs with Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick at No1
NINE of the top ten box office films last year were sequels or spin-offs, figures show.
Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick was at No1, with takings of £83.7million in the UK and Ireland — enough to make it into the all-time top ten.
At No2 was Avatar: The Way of Water, which took £70.9million.
Minions: The Rise of Gru was at No3, said the British Film Institute.
A sequel or spin-off has topped the box office chart almost every year since 2010.
The exception was 2020, when the pandemic left the way clear for the First World War epic 1917.
