The character portrayed by former Doctor Who star Louise Jameson came out of the closet to both Kim Tate and her daughter Rhona.

Since then, she’s been experimenting with dating apps in the hopes of finding a partner.

In recent scenes of the Yorkshire-based soap, Mary was happy and excited for her first date – but it didn’t go as planned.

When speaking to Rhona (played by Zoe Henry) about the date, Mary explained the woman was very different in the flesh.

The other woman seemed flirty and bold in her messages but was more passive once faced with Mary.

To make matters worse, Mary found out the woman’s children had been the ones to send the messages on her behalf to help her come out of her shell.

However, Mary won’t be letting one bad experience stop her from getting back on the horse.

Far from put off by the unsuccessful date, she revealed she’d be seeing someone else that afternoon.

Later on, Mary walked into the Woolpack and started chatting with Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw) who served her a glass of wine.

But eagle-eyed ITV viewers were rubbing their eyes, wondering how she paid for her drink when they spotted what was in her hand.

To their amusement and disbelief, Mary was holding on to a Tesco Clubcard, placed beneath her glass.

One bewildered soap fan commented: “Has… Mary just bought a drink in the Woolpack with her Tesco Clubcard? I actually can’t unsee this.”

Another pointed out: “Mary paying with her Tesco Clubcard?”, while another responded: “I noticed this as well” with a string of laughing emojis.

“I didn’t realise the Woolpack took Tesco Clubcard points as payment”, one viewer quipped.

But will Mary find “the one”?
