Huge BBC show cancelled suddenly – leaving fans gutted

ANOTHER popular BBC show has been cancelled, leaving its fans reeling.

The reboot of US show Gossip Girl, which streams in the UK on BBC iPlayer and also screens on BBC One, has been canned by American broadcaster HBO Max.

The streaming service has axed the re-imagining of the iconic noughties show after just two seasons.

It comes after a strong of recent axings, affecting both the BBC and Netflix.

Gossip Girl followed the naughty exploits of a group of pampered private school kids from New York's Upper East Side.

The new version of the show stars a host of buzzy young talent, including Whitney Peak and Evan Mock.

The actors have graced magazine covers on both sides of the Atlantic but it appears it wasn't enough to save the show from the chop.

“We are very grateful to showrunner/executive producer Joshua Safran, and executive producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz for bringing us back to the Upper East Side and all the scandals at Constance Billard,” HBO Max said in a statement.

“Although we are not moving forward with a third season of Gossip Girl, we thank them for the enticing love triangles, calculated backstabbing and impeccable fashion this series brought to a new audience.”

It's a shift fall from grace for the show, which launched in July 2021 to huge hype.

It also broke streaming records for HBO Max at the time and was quickly renewed for another round of bitching and backstabbing.

The original Gossip Girl, which premiered in 2007, proved to be much more successful.

Airing here on ITV2 and in the US on The CW, the show made stars of the likes of Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, Penn Badgley and Chase Crawford.

It ran for an impressive six seasons, finally signing off in 2012.

The move to ditch the reboot has saddened fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

"They really cancelled GossipGirl like my millennial heart is shattered into pieces on the ground. Please respect my privacy at this time," one fan mourned on twitter.

"GossipGirl getting canceled is literally the worst thing to come out of 2023," added a second.

Meanwhile a third weighed in of the show: "this is top tier television and i won’t apologize for believing that."

The series finale will air later this month on January 26 in the States and in the UK at a later date.
