Fourteen years have gone by since Karen made her first appearance in the program and she slowly but surely warmed the hearts of many viewers.

However, her fate hung in the balance when the BBC One daytime drama ended 2022 with a shocking cliff-hanger ahead of Christmas.

The surgery receptionist suddenly collapsed following a heated confrontation with freshly sacked trainee GP, Princess Buchanan.

Karen lied unconscious behind the reception desk until an unexpected visitor in the form of Luca McIntyre returned from his travels and helped her.

Since then, Karen has been left home recovering from her heart and with long-time receptionist Valerie Pitman's exit, the surgery has been short-staffed.

This left room for a new receptionist to find her mark.

Kirsty Millar, portrayed by Kiruna Stamell, made her Doctors debut on today's (Wednesday, January 11) instalment of the program.

And while it seems Kirsty's here to stay, should viewers expect Karen to throw in the towel?

In recent scenes, Karen was seen going from strength to strength as she recovers from her heart attack.

She was even able to give Princess some home truths from her hospital bed before the latter left altogether.

Karen was then allowed to return home where a fussing Rob has been taking care of her.

And it doesn't seem like Karen is ready to give up her job as of yet.

This week, when Zara (played by Elisabeth Dermot Walsh) has a serious think about her life, she pays Karen a visit.

Although the pair haven't always been on the best of terms, their meeting goes well and Karen takes this opportunity to open up.

She admits to Zara she was frightened by her heart attack but then reassures her that she's on the mend.

Karen then promises she'll soon get back to work.

But when can viewers expect her return to The Mill?
