Golden Globes 2023 LIVE updates — Jennifer Coolidge shocks A-list crowd with major on-stage blunder while presenting
ACTRESS Jennifer Coolidge made a huge blunder while presenting the award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series during the 80th Golden Globes.
As the iconic White Lotus star presented the award, she said: "And the Oscar goes to..." which made the audience at the 80th Golden Globe Awards laugh and cheer for her as she immediately recognized her mistake.
The joke came after Coolidge rattled off a hilarious monologue about her fear of presenting the important award because of her worries about tripping or mispronouncing the nominees' names.

‘Changed television history forever’
Billy Porter presented TV creator Ryan Murphy with a special honor for “changing television history forever” – the Carol Burnett Award.
The award is an honorary Golden Globe Award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen,” according to the HFPA.
It was presented for the first time at the 76th Golden Globe Awards.
Angela Bassett took home the gold
Angela Bassett won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The star previously won Best Actress in 1994 and during her speech, she said she is “grateful” to Hollywood for choosing her again.
“To the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love.”
Game of Thrones spinoff won big
The Golden Globe for Best Drama Series went to .
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book series, which is set 200 years before Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.
When the show first premiered on August 21, 2022, it made HBO history after drawing in nearly 10 million viewers, according to .
This quickly set the show up for success which is why the network renewed it for a second season shortly after.
Eddie Murphy made Will Smith Joke
Comedian Eddie Murphy said that there is a “definitive blueprint” that young people can follow to “achieve success, prosperity, longevity, and peace of mind.”
Murphy continued to set up the joke: “It’s a blueprint and I followed it my whole career:
“Pay your taxes, mind your business, and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f*****g mouth,” the comedian says, referencing the actor’s explosive moment at the 2022 Oscars.
The White Lotus won the Limited Series Globe
Mike White’s The White Lotus won Best Limited Series.
The director and creator was still teary after Jennifer Coolidge’s emotional speech when he got on stage, and he said he was “too drunk” to speak due to the lack of food at the event.
However, White gave a hilarious speech and thanked his cast and crew immensely.
Austin Butler won for Elvis
For his role as Elvis in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Austin Butler won Best Actor in a Drama.
“I want to thank my dance partner, the greatest dance partner I could’ve ever hoped for – Mister Tom Hanks,” Butler said.
Butler also thanked Denzel Washington for recommending him for the role after they had worked together.
The actor concluded his speech by thanking Elvis, Lisa Marie, and Priscilla Presley – and by saying he’ll never forget this honor.

Born on April 7, 1987, Jerrod Carmichael was raised in North Carolina.
After graduating from Robert B Glenn High School in 2005, Carmichael moved to Los Angeles to pursue stand-up comedy.
At the age of 20, Carmichael had never performed in front of a live audience before. His first show was at an open-mic night at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood.
By 2011, he had appeared in the New Faces showcase at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. He made his on-screen debut in 2013 with The Goodwin Games, a short-lived Fox sitcom.
The following year, Carmichael appeared in the hit Seth Rogen comedy Neighbors.
From 2015 until 2017, the 34-year-old co-created and co-wrote the semi-biographical series, The Carmichael Show.
Ke Huy Quan is back
Actor Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
He gave a shoutout to Steven Spielberg, who directed him in his first role as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
HFPA President took the stage
Toward the end of the award ceremony, the Hollywood Foreign Press Organization's President Helen Hoehn took to the stage to make remarks about the organization's year of "momentous change."
“We commit to continue strengthening our partnership with Hollywood and with the worldwide fans who celebrate like we do the best in film and television,” Hoehne said on stage in a gorgeous green dress.
“We will continue to support groups that amplify a variety of voices and continue to add representation to our organization from around the world as we did this past year.”
Many actors were no shows
Golden Globes viewers were outraged by A-list no-shows as lots of fan-favorite winners skipped the ceremony.
Cate Blanchett, who won for her performance in Tár, was not able to accept her award because she was said to be filming in Britain.
Amanda Seyfried wasn't at the event to accept her award for her portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout because she was said to be working on a new musical.
Kevin Costner couldn't attend the ceremony to accept his Best Actor award for Yellowstone because he was forced to shelter in place in Santa Barbara due to severe storms and flooding.
Michelle Yeoh snapped 'shut up' during speech
Michelle Yeoh won best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy for her role as Evelyn Quan Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Once her name was announced and she got on the Golden Globes stage, she stood at the microphone and took in the view.
She said it took her 40 years to stand on that stage. It was her first nomination and her first win at the Golden Globes.
During her speech, the classic awards show music began to play, and that was supposed to be her cue to wrap it up.
But Michelle waited too long for this moment, so she yelled: "Shut up, please. I could beat you up." at the producers backstage playing the music.
Host ripped 'racist' awards
Jerrod Carmichael opened the show with no bells and whistles, shooting straight with viewers and those in the live audience.
He said during the opening speech: "This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because The Hollywood Foreign Press Association – which, I won’t say they’re a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd got killed, so…do with that what you will.”
Fans shocked by Angela Bassett's age
Black Panther actress Angela Bassett's stunning look at the awards show sparked much conversation about how young she appears to look for her age of 64.
On Twitter a fan praised: "Angela Bassett is 64 years old. She must be a kind person to look that good at 64 because kindness is a fountain of youth."
Another fan complimented: "Well deserved! 64 and still looking like a whole snack!"
A third fan exclaimed: "ANGELA BASSETT IS 64???? WTF SHE LOOKS SO YOUNG."
Other fans jokingly implied that Angela must be a mythical "vampire," vampires don't age, since she doesn't seem to ever get older.
"...She could in fact be a vampire because there’s no way she should look as good as she does — No freaking way," one fan on Twitter expressed.
Jennifer Coolidge is invited to parties now
During her acceptance speech, star Jennifer Coolidge revealed that she is grateful to The White Lotus director Mike White for getting her invited to parties.
"Mike White you have given me hope - even if this is the end because you killed me off," the actress joked.
"You have just changed my life in a million different ways and my neighbors are speaking to me.
"I was never invited to one party on my hill and now everyone is inviting me."
Jennifer Coolidge's speech, continued
Jennifer Coolidge quipped: "Some of these things would go like five different sequels … American Pie – I milked that thing to the bone. I’m still going for six, seven – whatever they want."
Jennifer then turned her attention to The White Lotus creator Mike White, saying: "Mike White. I just, you know, I just truly I just want you all to know that I had such big dreams and expectations as a younger person but what happens is they get sort of fizzled by life. I thought I was gonna be the queen of Monaco but somebody else did it."
Her concluding sentence was then cut off, as she cursed and was censored.
Jennifer Coolidge's acceptance speech
An out-of-breath Jennifer Coolidge, 61, took to the stage in a floor-length sequin gown during the show.
She began her speech by simply saying: "Thank you. Thank you so much. Wow. Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press. It really means a lot."
The Legally Blonde actress then joked: "I can put this down right? I don’t work out, you know what I mean? I can’t hold it that long."
Her speech took a turn as she began reflecting on some of the harder times in her career, recalling: "There were like five people that kept me going for like 20 years with these little jobs and Ryan Murphy you were one of them. … It was you Ryan and let’s see, we got…Well, who else was there? It was just you Ryan.
"I didn’t know anybody and it was just this thing that wasn’t going anywhere and then there was these people that would give me these cute little jobs that would keep me going."
Host's joke about Scientology, continued
Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, allegedly vanished in 2007.
Actress and former Scientologist Leah Remini filed a missing person report to police and claimed Shelly had not been publicly seen since 2007.
Six years later, Los Angeles Police Department said they made contact with Shelly but would not confirm whether they saw her or spoke to her on the phone.
The Church of Scientology branded Remini's claims "just harassment" and said Shelly was not seen as she had been working "non-stop."
Host's joke about Scientology didn't land
Jerrod Carmichael made a joke about the "safe return" of Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige's wife, Shelly, who allegedly vanished in 2007.
Carmichael made the joke as he was introducing two of notable Scientologist Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick costars.
Cruise, who was reportedly absent from Tuesday night's awards ceremony, returned his three Golden Globe Awards in 2021 following controversy around the show's governing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
When he made the joke, Carmichael appeared onstage juggling the three statues that Cruise returned.
“Look I’m just the host, but a pitch ... Maybe we can take these three things [Golden Globes] and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige," Carmichael said.
Fans slam host's 'disgraceful' joke
Golden Globes fans have slammed host Jerrod Carmichael's "disgraceful" joke about Whitney Houston's death.
Carmichael appeared onstage following a commercial break and claimed that he was told to "shout out the venue that we're in."
"So, we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton," he continued.
Houston, 48, died on February 11, 2012.
She was found unresponsive in a bathtub inside of the swanky California hotel.
"Who is this guy ? That was outrageous what he said about the late Whitney Houston. He should be banned from any awards show forever! #DISGRACEFUL!," one person tweeted.
"And NOBODY Laughed!!! That s**t was uncalled for!," another wrote.
Zendaya is 'so sorry' for missing award
Zendaya has taken to Instagram to accept her award shortly after it was announced that she won Best Actress in a Drama Series.
"I'm so sorry I wasn't able to be there tonight, but I just wanted to say thank you to @goldenglobes for this incredible honor," the actress wrote.
"To my fellow nominees, it is a privilege to be named beside you, I admire you all deeply.
"Thank you to my Euphoria family, without you, none of this is possible.
"Lastly, than you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has allowed Rue into theirs. I think everyone knows how much she means to me, but the fact that she can mean something to someone else is a gift.
"I'm honestly at a loss for words as I type this, all I can say is thank you thank you thank you."
