Golden Globes 2023 LIVE updates — Jennifer Coolidge shocks A-list crowd with major on-stage blunder while presenting

ACTRESS Jennifer Coolidge made a huge blunder while presenting the award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series during the 80th Golden Globes.

As the iconic White Lotus star presented the award, she said: "And the Oscar goes to..." which made the audience at the 80th Golden Globe Awards laugh and cheer for her as she immediately recognized her mistake.

The joke came after Coolidge rattled off a hilarious monologue about her fear of presenting the important award because of her worries about tripping or mispronouncing the nominees' names.

  • Host slammed for Whitney Houston comment

Jerrod Carmichael was also slammed for making a "disgraceful" joke about Whitney Houston's death.

He appeared onstage following a commercial break and claimed that he was told to "shout out the venue that we're in."

"So, we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton," he continued.

Whitney died aged 48 on February 11, 2012.

She was found unresponsive in a bathtub inside the swanky California hotel.

"Who is this guy ? That was outrageous what he said about the late Whitney Houston. He should be banned from any awards show forever! #DISGRACEFUL!," one person tweeted.

"And NOBODY Laughed!!! That s**t was uncalled for!," another wrote.

  • Jerrod Carmichael slammed, part two

Viewers at home were less than impressed with Jerrod's comment.

One tweeted: "Did I mishear that or did they just cheap a** joke demean Rock Hudson and Will Smith after the heartfelt LGBTQIA boosting by Ryan Murphy."

Another added: "Jerrod Carmichael is a goddamn disgrace. Before that sick “joke” about Houston, he made a disgusting remark about Rock Hudson/Will Smith."

"A Will Smith joke in 2023 is wack and corny. #GoldenGlobe," a third posted.

A fourth user commented: "What a weird joke to make about Will Smith - that wasn't a display of masculinity unless you put toxic in front of it."

  • Jerrod Carmichael slammed for Will Smith dig

During Tuesday's ceremony, Golden Globes host and comedian Jerrod Carmichael made a "cheap" and "disgusting" joke about Will slapping Chris Rock at last year's Oscars.

Jerrod made the gag midway through the 80th annual ceremony in Los Angeles.

He said: "While we were on commercial, we actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for 'best portrayal of masculinity on television'.

"So please, give it up for Will Smith you guys. Please."

The skit was met with a mixture of laughter and boos from the crowd.

  • Golden Globes nominee slammed Kardashians

Before the awards show, iconic actress and nominee Sheryl Lee Ralph gave an interview to InStyle where she slammed the Kardashians.

The Abbott Elementary star was asked what message she would send to her 15-year-old self. Though she was taken aback by the question, the star quickly came up with an answer.

Sheryl said: “There’s nothing wrong with your nose. There is nothing wrong with the shade of your skin. There is nothing wrong with the way your hair grows out of your head.

"And there is certainly nothing wrong with your lips because there will be some people called Kardashians and they will pay $10,000 for your lips.”

She finished by saying: "Hang in there 15-year-old Sheryl Lee Ralph! You're good!"

  • Fans think Milly Alcock looked 'wasted' on stage

House Of The Dragons star Milly Alcock surprised fans at last night's Golden Globes as she struggled to keep herself together while onstage alongside her co-star, Emma D'Arcy.

Viewers noticed the 22-year-old seemed intoxicated while she, Emma and film director Miguel Sapochnik accepted the Best Television Series award for the hit show.

Milly could barely contain her excitement while latching onto Emma, giggling, and pointing at the audience.

"Milly Alcock wasted at the golden globes is Top Tier," one person tweeted.

"Milly Alcock is so drunk RN lmao I love her #GoldenGlobes," another said.

  • Known to be ‘edgy’

Traditionally the Golden Globes has been known as the edgier, boozy little brother of the more prestigious Academy Awards.

In 2011 Robert Downey Jr joked he did not “know if an actress can do her best work until I’ve slept with her.”

And Avengers star Jeremy Renner, 50, joked about Jennifer Lopez’s impressive ‘globes’ on stage in 2015.

  • Oscars v Golden Globes

One significant distinction between the two award shows is that the Golden Globes also honor television, while the Oscars honor exclusively film.

The Golden Globe winners are chosen by a small group of 93 members of the HFPA, but the Oscar winners are chosen by roughly 60,000 industry professionals who are members of the AMPAS.

The Globes are also a bigger event than the Oscars, with food and beverages offered, whereas the Oscars typically only feature the awards ceremony with the remainder of the celebration taking place in the after-party.

Finally, in comparison to the Oscars, the Golden Globes have more categories.

  • What are the Golden Globes?

The Golden Globe Award is an accolade bestowed to a winner by 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which celebrates excellence in cinema and television in the United States and abroad.

The yearly ceremony and dinner, where the winners are revealed, are a big element of the awards.

In January 1944, the first Golden Globe Awards were presented, honoring the finest in cinema and television, including cast and crew.

The Golden Globe Awards now include 25 categories, including 14 for feature movies and 11 for television.

  • Retired Golden Globes awards

Some awards at the Golden Globes have been retired, but were previously awarded in the past.

    Those awards include:

    • New Star of the Year – Actor – Awarded from 1948 to 1983

  • Why the Golden Globes weren’t televised last year, continued

Deadline reported that the decision not to broadcast an online version of the Globes had nothing to do with the HFPA’s multimillion-dollar, multi-year deal with NBC.

According to a source at the Comcast-owned network, NBC is not blocking the HFPA’s livestream.

NBC decided to pull the plug on the show due to the lack of diversity by the HFPA.

HFPA president Helen Hoehne told : “Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.”

  • Why the Golden Globes weren’t televised last year

The Golden Globe Awards were not available for viewing on television or streaming services last year

“This year’s event is going to be a private event and will not be live-streamed,” an HFPA spokesperson told Deadline at the time.

The HFPA continued: “We will be providing real-time updates on winners on the Golden Globes website and our social media.”

  • Brendan Fraser shades the Hollywood Foreign Press Association

After missing the Golden Globes, one might wonder why the first-time nominee was not there.

It shouldn't come as a shock as the George of the Jungle actor did state “I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” in November 2022, one month before nominations were announced. He followed with “No, I will not participate.”

  • James Cameron reveals Leonardo DiCaprio almost wasn't in the Titanic

In an interview at the Golden Globes, director James Cameron shares Leonardo DiCaprio's initial thoughts on playing Jack Dawson.

"He didn't want to do a leading man," Cameron states. He elaborates saying "I had to really twist his arm to be in the movie. He didn't want to do it. He thought it was boring."

Eventually, DiCaprio was swayed after Cameron convinced him that playing the role of a lifetime in the Titanic "was actually a difficult challenge."

  • Jerrod Carmichael Shares POV of Golden Globes 'Racist' Past in Opening Monologue

The host of the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards let his feelings fly toward the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe Awards returned to television on Tuesday night despite alleged past controversies.

Renowned stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted. He is the first Black host in the famous ceremony's long history. The show began in January 1944.

He began his speech by stating: “Hello. Welcome to the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards. I am your host, Jerrod Carmichael. And I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here ‘cause I’m Black,”

He added: “I’m here, truly, because all of you — I look out into this room and see a lot of talented people… and regardless of whatever the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s past may be, this is an evening where we get to celebrate. And I think this industry deserves evenings like these.”
