Cast members for the new series include newcomers Kym Marsh and Scarlett Thomas, while a number of former Waterloo Road stars reprised their characters.

As a new school year begins, a peaceful protest turned into a school riot and the events of the day had huge ramifications for everyone involved.

Many years later, the first episode aired on BBC One tonight, but viewers were not impressed.

Some even said they "switched off" just minutes into the show and branded it " a pile of c**p" as they took to Twitter to complain.

A third wrote: "I give up, this is awful and it's barely been 10minutes. ."

A fourth raged: "5 minutes in and this remade is already w**k."
