However, Jon, 53, put his foot in it as he spoke to sports presenter Holly Hamilton about the tennis ahead of the Australian Open which starts later this month.

Holly said: "The Australian Open starts two weeks today. I say this every year, it creeps up on me.

"It's like a surprise. It happens every January."

Jon replied: "I can't believe that was a year ago" as both Sally and Holly agreed.

He added: "We're getting old, that's the thing! Time passes too quickly."

But Sally, 51, was having none of it and hit back: "Speak for yourself."

Thankfully the pair were in good spirits and laughed about Jon's comment.

While Jon had returned to BBC Breakfast last week, Sally was on the red sofa for the first time since Christmas today.

Viewers were delighted to see Sally again as they took to social media to welcome her back.

"Morning sally great to see you back on breakfast you look stunning and totally beautiful," said one viewer.

Another said: "Happy new year Sally good to see you back on the big red sofa."

"@sallynugent nice to see you back on the red sofa happy new year," added a third.

While a fourth posted: "@BBCBreakfast great to see you both back HNY."
