LOVE Island fans have been left gobsmacked to learn that contestants will be forced to quit social media while on the show.
The ITV show announced its latest rules ahead of the 2023 series today, revealing that for the first time ever friends and family will be banned from tweeting and posting on Islander’s behalf’s.
In past series, islanders' teams used their accounts to encourage viewers to vote for them and build up their following.
However, they were often subject to vile abuse from trolls and there were even occasional spats between contestants' family and friends.
The new rules package reads: “As part of extended measures to protect both the Islanders and their families from the adverse effects of social media, participants will be asked to pause handles and accounts on their social media platforms for the duration of their time on the show.
“Islanders’ accounts will remain dormant while they are in the Villa, so that nothing is published on their behalf.”

Fans believe the move will be good for those going in – but won’t help them when it comes to landing brand deals.
One person commented: “This will definitely impact the number of followers they gain but I think it’s a great idea.”
Another added: “GOOD. it was wild to put pressure on family and friends to filter out messages for islanders. they saw a lot of nasty things on behalf of their loved ones who they have no control over.”
Others are hoping it will see a change in the type of people applying, with someone remarking: “I wonder if this rule will stop people like Antigoni from coming on the show? She admitted she only joined to grow her music career.

“If she had to limit her potential to get followers I don't think she would've been as drawn to it. So I think this rule could be a plus for weeding out the clout chasers in addition to protecting mental health.”
While another added on Reddit: “After the love island documentary it’s crazy hearing a lot of past love islanders saying they go on for brand deals, money, followers clout etc. but it’s so obvious watching that everybody is just there for their own gain. Taking this aspect away is interesting and quite humorous.”
