Bake Off fans devastated by shock news after Matt Lucas’ departure leaves Noel Fielding without a co-host

BAKE Off fans have been left devastated following Matt Lucas' shock news that he's quit the show.

The comedian took to his social media accounts to announce that he's left the big tent for good.

In a statement, Matt said it had "become clear" to him that he could no longer present the Channel 4 baking show.

"Farewell Bake Off! It's been a delicious experience and I can't imagine a more fun way of spending my summers," he said.

He continued: "But it's become clear to me that I can't present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

"So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else."

The Little Britain star, 48, presented Bake Off alongside actor and comedian Noel Fielding.

Fans have been left devastated following his announcement and took to social media to wish Matt the best.

"Ah no! Gutted!! You will be missed my friend! You always brightened up my screen everytime bake off was on thank you for the memories and good luck to all of your future endeavours," wrote one fan.

Another said: "Absolutely gutted. It won't be the same without you. Thank you for making @BritishBakeOff one of the funniest, happiest programmes on TV."

"I don’t want you to leave the show, Matt! You are amazing on the show and you make me laugh!" said a third viewer.

While a fourth posted: "That’s the end of bake off then.. What a shame."

Great British Bake Off bosses have paid tribute to Matt following the news.

"We've loved having Matt Lucas brighten up our Tent for the last three years, especially when laughter and smiles were so much in need," they said.

"We appreciate everything he's done for Bake Off, from working in Covid bubbles to supporting the bakers.

"It's been a pleasure - thanks Matt."
