The BBC sold the US giant the global streaming rights to Doctor who outside the UK.

This means the budgets on the 2024 series starring the 15th Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa will be larger than ever.

A source said: “Fans can expect to see Sontarans, Weeping Angels and Sea Devils in separate series showing what they get up to when the Doctor isn’t there to stop them, along with Daleks and Cybermen.”

Speaking last year Davies said that these exciting new projects were part of what lured him back to the BBC - and he suggested there was even a chance for a Doctor Who dedicated channel.

He said: "There are things coming up that are brand new ways of telling stories that have never been done before,” he explained. “So it just feels new, I wouldn't have gone back if it wasn't feeling new.”

The showrunner has expanded the Doctor Who universe before, as he was behind Torchwood, starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness and The Sarah Jane Adventures, featuring Elisabeth Sladen as the lead actress.

News of the Doctor Who spin-off series comes after it was announced that Millie — Kellie Neelan in the ITV soap Coronation — is to play Ruby Sunday, the Time Lord’s latest companion, in the BBC sci-fi series.

She will star alongside the new Doctor, played by Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa, 30.

Thrilled Millie, 18, said: “It’s a gift of a role and a dream come true.”

Millie's departure from Corrie came as the young TV star wanted to explore other options in her career.
