Grand Designs viewers rip into ‘awful’ House of the Year contender with very unusual feature

GRAND Designs fans were floored by the "awful" transformation of an old-fashioned Victorian-style home, as it was given a very modern twist.

The Den, in Tighnabruaich, Scotland, appeared on the latest episode of the Channel 4 property show, which showcased homes in the running to be named House of the Year 2022.

The property is made up of two joined flats and clashed Victorian and contemporary build styles put together.

Presenter Natasha Haq was given a tour of the property by the owner, Shona Doherty who showed her some of the rare, traditional-style features inside the place.

However, viewers didn't seem to like the way the property was concealed and put inside a "zinc tube".

Many viewers didn't approve of the house being shortlisted for the House of the Year award and took to Twitter to share their opinions.

One viewer wrote: "I can’t watch more than 10-15 seconds of Grand Designs. The houses and people are awful."

Another added: "When I rule the world any house that is black looks like a metal shed or barn will immediately be destroyed and an actual house like that beautiful house with the old walls will replace it."

A third penned: "The Den is my least favourite of tonight's offerings."

A fourth chimed in: "How did this one get planning permission? The Den owner even said it looks like a new build."

A fifth viewer echoed: ";Dont like The Den, could have been so much more."

The project was described by Channel 4 presenter, Kevin McCloud, as "a futuristic zinc cube, wrapped around a breathtaking double-height space designed for 21st-century living."

He added: "But the memories of its past lives on in its carefully conserved and exposed Victorian fabric.
