“His royalties and merchandise still tick along every year, despite his recent inactivity.

“He’s also very savvy with his cash, as he’s made lots of wise investments.”

The accounts for his main company, Hussein Traders Ltd, showed that he has £22.6million in investments, and is £10.5million in profit. Peter has taken time away from the spotlight since 2017 when he cancelled his UK tour due to “unforeseen family circumstances”.

His appearances over the past few years have been limited to only a surprise showing during a charity screening of his series Car Share in 2018, a cameo on Cat Deeley's Radio 2 show in January 2021 and hosting two charity events to raise money for cancer sufferer Laura Nuttall seven months later.

He also made a brief return in April 2020 for the BBC’s Big Night In, when Children In Need and Comic Relief combined.

Since announcing his comeback earlier this month however, Peter is firmly back in the spotlight.

He appeared on Zoe Ball's Radio 2 Breakfast Show to promote his new monthly residency at London’s O2 Arena, which runs from December 16 until November 18 next year, having already announced tour dates across the UK.

The Phoenix Nights favourite is the first comedian ever to secure such a deal.

He said: “There has basically been me and Prince who have done it — and look what happened to him.

Michael Jackson, he was another, he was supposed to do 50 nights. I got his shows.”

Each one of the gigs is sure to be a Thriller.
