Excited Millie, who played Kelly Neelan in ITV soap Corrie, told Children In Need presenters Mel Giedroyc and Jason Manford: "It's insane. I'm so honoured that I was considered for an audition.

"I just hope I can make you all happy and fill the boots of the other companions."

Millie also revealed her character is called Ruby Sunday, but joked that she couldn't confirm if it was "Sundae like the ice cream" or the day of the week.

In August it was announced that Millie had decided to quit Corrie after three years.

Her character was last seen on the Cobbles in September.

Millie joins a long list of sidekicks who have appeared on the popular BBC sci-fi series since its revival in 2005.

Fan favourites Billie Piper, Catherine Tate and Bradley Walsh have taken on the sidekick in recent years.

Mandip Gill played the character Yasmin Khan throughout Jodie Whittaker's stint as the Doctor from 2018 to 2022.

Jodie faced her final battles as the time lord in October in a special episode of Doctor Who to mark the BBC's centenary.

The actress, 40, became the first woman to portray the Doctor when she took over the role from Peter Capaldi in 2017.

During the feature-length programme, viewers were left surprised as Jodie's 13th Time Lord regenerated into David Tennant, who previously played the 10th incarnation of the Doctor.

Following the special, it was confirmed David, 51, will become the 14th incarnation with Catherine Tate reprising her role as his former companion Donna Noble for three special episodes set to air in November 2023.

Ncuti, 30, will then take control of the Tardis as the 15th Doctor, with his first episode due to air over the festive period in 2023.

Children In Need, which helps to raise money to provide frontline support to children and young people across the UK, was hosted by Chris Ramsey, Alex Scott, Ade Adepitan, Mel Giedroyc, and comedian Jason Manford.

It also included a children's takeover of much-loved comedy game show Blankety Blank with former Strictly stars Maisie Smith and John Waite as celebrity contestants.
