Emmerdale’s Reverend Charles is ‘hiding who he really is’ reveals Kevin Mathurin
EMMERDALE'S Reverend Charles is 'hiding who he really is' actor Kevin Mathurin has revealed.
The 49-year-old has played the village vicar since 2020, and over the past year, his life has been explored further by the arrival of son Ethan and more recently, estranged daughter Naomi.
However, Kevin admits there is a side to the character that viewers have yet to see.
Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, Kevin said: "He's similar to me, grounded, down to earth, a bit of a maverick...you can tell he's had a past.
"You can tell there's an element of Charles that he's holding down who he really is, well, not who he really is but the darker sides [of his personality] because he's had that past but he's a man of God."
Charles has also forged connections and relationships in the village, and Kevin has been delighted to see that side of his character develop.

He said: "Knowing that the family is evolving and more characters are being introduced [is great].
"And working with big characters that you know are landmarks of the show. To be doing scenes and storylines with them makes you think, 'OK Charles is moving into different circles' so to speak.
"It makes me feel good and 'OK, I'm doing a good job'.
"That's his job as the vicar that's he's looking out and being around all the developments of the parishioners.

"So whatever the storyline is, Charles will pop in and out, whether he's heavily involved or just passing through."
Meanwhile Kevin also revealed how the cast find out about major deaths, considering Emmerdale lost a number of big characters during the 50th anniversary week earlier this month.
He said the days of having to flick to the back of a script to find out if your character had survived were long gone.
He explained: "If you don't get an email or you don't get a call, then you're alright."
Emmerdale airs on ITV and is available on ITV Hub.
