'ARE YOU SERIOUS?'

Richard Madeley in furious GMB clash with guest who says she’s not proud to be British

RICHARD Madeley locked horns with a Good Morning Britain guest today after she said she wasn't proud to be British.

The ITV daytime show hosted a debate on patriotism after former prime minister Liz Truss's chaotic 44 days in power made Britain a laughing stock on the world stage.

Comedian Kate Smurthwaite appeared opposite political commentator Dominique Samuels while Richard and co-host Kate Garraway chaired the conversation.

Impassioned Smurthwaite launched into a tirade against Britain's history of Empire and the slave trade, and then asked: "When were we proud to be British?"

Richard threw his hand up into the air and exclaimed: "Excuse me!"

Garraway then pointed out how British democracy was a political system adopted by much of the world.

Smurthwaite hit back: "Sometimes it's been forced on people while ripping away their natural resources, taking people away, there's a horrific history of how these things have happened."

Dominique then said: "How is this relevant though?"

Smurthwaite continued by mentioning reparations that were still due from the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Dominique responded: "As an ethnic minority I don't want to be lectured by people like you about things that happened hundreds of years ago."

Smurthwaite then riled Richard when she said the British Government hasn't made enough effort to seek out a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

She accused the government of "fanning the flames" of war.

Stunned, Richard said: "Are you serious. Fanning the flames?"

Richard insisted Russian President Vladimir Putin has not listened, nor been interested in, rational calls for peace.

He said: "Putin won't sit around the table. What are you talking about?"

Garraway then brought the conversation back on track after Richard branded the guest "nonsensical".
